Chulalongkorn Library

OCLC APRC meeting 2018 participates visited Chulalongkorn Library on Nov. 29, Thursday afternoon around 17: 20.  The visit was scheduled after the second-day full meeting, about 80 participates staying with us for this visit.

The visit was about an hour. We began our visit from the meeting room on the 7th floor and descended floor by floor.

They first welcomed us with a small robot on the stage, the face showing in the robot later came out to be our guide today and the cataloging librarian of this library. (Sorry, I  forget his name but we were amazed that their cataloging librarian is male as a female cataloging librarian is more common.)

He gave us a brief introduction to the library. Officially established in  1917, Chulalongkorn is the oldest and most prestigious university in Thailand. It is comprehensive and research-intensive and has rich collections in rare books as well as different languages and cultural collections, and many of them were gifts or collections by the royal family.

The library holds one of the largest collections in Thailand and serves for students, faculty, and the public. It is a rich knowledge resource that supports academic learning and to be a dynamic research library that supports research excellence. The library also houses creative studios, where everyone can explore, create, share and apply knowledge and ideas.

It is a true knowledge hub.

We started our tour with the rare collections. Rules for the library were posted on the wall with diagrams, from upper right to left are:

1. Please dress properly
2. Do share your table with others
3. Please do not rearrange the books in the shelf
4. Please handle all library materials and facilities with care

We started our tour with the special collections on the 5th floor, the gift from last King Bhumibol Adulyadej. King Bhumibol, Rama IX is a renowned saxophone player and composer. There is a statue of him and his beloved saxophone at the door.

As the university was originally founded during King Chulalongkorn's reign and later renamed after his name, there is a small alter/ exhibition space within the special collection area, paying respect for the King Chulalongkorn, Rama V.

Everyone paid close attention to those treasure collections as well as royal crests and monarch information of Thailand.

List of authorities

L ist of authorities that we connect our Qi CMS to via Linked Open Data (API) and so far we have the  Getty Thesauri,  Wikipedia,  VIAF   Geonames.   Nomenclature(don't have a public API), but we can download them and import them into the database. The big one we cannot seem to be able to figure out is  LOC (Library or Congress) and specifically the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)  and Thesaurus for Graphic Materials (TGM).  Is anyone aware of an API that (like the  vocab.getty.edu ) could be queries via SPARQL or anything similar?  Failing that, can they be downloaded in a usable format (i.e. one we can import in a database)?  For TGM, XML and TXT files are  here , (although a little strange, as they have no formal hierarchy),  but we cannot find an equivalent for LCSH:  this page  lists a few formats,  but it's not clear how to download them or indeed use them.
